Paris, Jun 25 (Prensa Latina) The cost of the French military intervention in Mali will exceed the 400 million euros at the end of the year, according to estimates of the Chief of the Military Staff, Edouard Guillaud, published today in this capital city.

According to the source, in May they had already spent 300 million euros in the so called Operation Serval in Mali.

In Malian territory near 3,500 military are involved in the intervention and the yearly expenses for each man is near 100,000 euros, said the Chief of the Military Staff.

When he was asked if a military base was going to be established in Mali, Guillaud rejected the idea although he confirmed the presence of detachments for instruction and military assistance.

In last March, the co-president of Left Wing Party and former presidential candidate, Jean-Luc Melenchon, criticized the military intervention in Mali and the huge cost of a war at those times when France experienced serious economic crisis.

In Melenchon's opinion, France is protecting its interests in the region, particularly the extraction of uranium used in French nuclear power plants.
