I listened to Ms. Ameen’s speech on the night that she conceded defeat and it was clearto me why the UNC lost in their heartland constituency and why the People’s Partnership Government needs to do more than reflect and introspect before it faces the polls in the upcoming Local Government Elections.
First of all, the net effect of the Tobago House of Assembly elections and the byeelection for the MP for Chaguanas West, shows that in reality a rejection of the
PEOPLE’S PARTNERSHIP style politics in three constituencies, which were handsomely won by the PEOPLE’S PARTNERSHIP on May 24, 2010............and here I refer specifically to Tobago East, Tobago West and Chaguanas West. In reality these seatsare no longer under the control of the PEOPLE’S PARTNERSHIP.
With regard to the two Tobago seats, the representatives are there but they are leaders without members because if elections are called today, the people of Tobago will not vote for the PEOPLE’S PARTNERSHIP. This is a downward slide. The loss in the last two elections was not marginal for the People’s Partnership but emphatic.
